An audiovisual City Tour through two eras

In keeping with this year’s theme of the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer, “The Golden Twenties,” pad is presenting a guided tour of Mainz that uses audio commentary and video projections to bring the Mainz of the 1920s to life and contrast it with the present day. For this extraordinary city tour, the Mainz-based performance duo Schmitt&Schulz has not only researched facts about the history of the Weimar era but, above all, presents participants with personal, perhaps otherwise hidden stories, life stories, poetry, music, art, and culture from that time, thereby creating a comprehensive audiovisual experience.

During the roughly one-and-a-half-hour guided tour of various sites in Mainz’s Old Town, participants can expect, among other things, a frozen Rhine, a theater scandal, a woman who becomes a man, memories of persecution and war, hopeful visions of the future, and the open question of whether history is bound to repeat itself.
