FAT - Exhibition and Performance
18. December 18:00-21. December 12:00
Fat – the second largest organ in the human body and the most unpopular: there is hardly anyone in our affluent society who does not want to get rid of their own body fat. The more fat a body has, the less attractive it appears to us. Those who do not have their body fat under control are considered undisciplined and lazy, even though there are often medical reasons for having “too much” fat.
Mainz-based performance artist Nic Schmitt, who herself suffers from a fat distribution disorder known as lipoedema, preserved her own body fat in synthetic resin after undergoing liposuction.
In the exhibition ‘Fett’ (Fat), she now presents sculptures for the first time in which she has transformed the unloved and repulsive into objects of worship, into relic-like works of art. Schmitt reveals to visitors a disturbing view of a part of her body that is otherwise hidden from our gaze and puts social conventions of beauty and sublimity to the test.
The exhibition is open on 18 December from 6 to 9 p.m., on 19 December from 6 to 8 p.m., on 20 December from 2 to 6 p.m. and on 21 December from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the K-Lab , located in the Mainzer Neustadt.
For the opening and the finisage Nic Schmitt will show a performance.
